PEM’s Fashion and Design Gallery Opens
Presented by Peabody Essex Museum

The Peabody Essex Museum opens 40,000-sq-ft wing and 13 new galleries and exhibitions.

PEM’s Fashion and Design gallery invites visitors to consider that we
are designing creatures who continually manipulate, respond to, and
mold our changing world. Whether designing for self-adornment or for
use, this installation unifies two traditionally disparate collecting
fields to better understand what underlies our motivations and capacity
for designing ourselves and the world around us. Ensembles from the
Iris Apfel Rare Bird of Fashion collection celebrate the exuberant
remixing and inventive styling of one of the world’s most prominent
fashion icons, while constellations of unique and culturally
significant works of design, fashion, and textiles explore distinctive
and resourceful forms of creative expression.

The Disappearance of My Mother

Presented by Boston Women’s Film Festival
Benedetta
Barzini wants to disappear. An iconic fashion model in the 1960s, she
became a muse to Warhol, Dali, Penn, and Avedon. As a radical feminist
in the 1970s, she fought for the rights and emancipation of women. But
at the age of 75, she becomes fed up with all the roles life has
imposed upon her and decides to leave everything and everybody behind,
to disappear to a place as far as possible from the world she knows.

Hiding behind the camera, her son Beniamino witnesses her journey.
Having filmed his mother since he was a child in spite of all her
resistance, he now wants to make a film about her, to keep her close
for as long as possible—or, at least, as long as his camera keeps
running. The making of the film turns into a battle between mother and
son, a stubborn fight to capture the ultimate image of Benedetta—the
image of her liberation.

THE REMIX: Hip Hop X Fashion
Presented by Boston Women’s Film Festival

As hip hop music was taking off in the late 80s and 90s, associated
fashion trends and styles were also making their voice heard. And both
were largely dominated by men. But as the voices of Mary J. Blige,
Missy Elliot, and Lil’ Kim grew louder, so too did the influence of
their female designers and stylists working behind the scenes.

The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion takes a look at the journeys of fashion
architect Misa Hylton and streetwear designer April Walker, among
others, who grabbed a foothold in hip hop fashion and never let go. The
film directed by Lisa Cortex and Farah X focuses on the cultural impact
these talented women, Dapper Dan, and Kerby Jean-Raymond have made in
the fashion world, from iconic looks styled in influential music videos
to their global cultural impact.

Followed by Q&A with Elena Romero

from the founder

This is a special year!

It marks #year25 of Boston Fashion Week.

It’s hard to believe that so many years have passed and that we’ve arrived at such a meaningful milestone.

We
have been spending the last few months revisiting many of the memorable
moments that have been part of a quarter of a century of service.

Everything
about this trip down memory lane comes back to a quote that has been a
guiding principle for our community since the beginning.

“Never doubt
that a small group
of thoughtful,
committed citizens
can change the world.

Indeed, it is the only thing
that ever has.”
— Margaret Mead

We never had a doubt that this is what it’s about.

That’s why we’d like to extend an invitation to the thoughtful,
committed citizens, both past and present, that move fashion forward in
our city to help us celebrate our region’s legacy, define what Boston
fashion means today, and
help write the next chapter.

You are the professionals, the businesses, the schools, the many
institutions that explore fashion through the arts, design, science and
technology, the connoisseurs, and the consumers of fashion.

Be a part of the story.

how to participate in BFW19

Any
individual or organization that is interested and able to put together
a show or special event is invited to do so. There is no fee to be
listed on the official schedule. All events that take place during
Boston Fashion Week are independently produced by the designers and
event planners involved in those particular projects. Those
designers/event planners are solely responsible for all aspects of
their events including production, promotion, press access and model
selection.

In
addition to the many independent events taking place throughout the
Metro-Boston area and beyond, Boston Fashion Week produces a series of
industry and public events/programs designed to tie the week together
and increase the visibility of the week as a whole in the press and
public eye.

Please
note that our online calendar will continue to serve as an umbrella for
events scheduled both before and after the official lineup between
September
22-28, 2019

about
boston fashion week

Boston
Fashion Week was founded as a civic initiative in 1995. The force
behind the week has been dedicated to creating opportunities that
increase the viability and visibility of the local industry. The series
of fashion related events throughout Greater Boston and beyond serves
as a platform for both established industry professionals and aspiring
newcomers to showcase their work as well as network with peers and the
public.

This
annual celebration of Boston style featuring a great wealth of local
talent, is unique in that it is designed to engage the community
directly, at the grassroots level – cultivating fashion as an integral
part of the Boston lifestyle. This approach has also begun to attract
the interest of national and international designers who are looking to
connect authentically with a Boston audience.

Accessibility
and diversity in programming allow the public to engage the week on
many levels; experiencing a show, taking in an exhibit, participating
in an educational program, or joining in the festivities at parties.

The week
also contributes to a sense of civic pride about what the region has to
offer and how it continues to evolve. The public is invited to become
active participants in the local fashion community by supporting local
style makers during Boston Fashion Week and throughout the rest of the
year.
